Glaciers & Outdoors
Mendenhall Glacier, humpback whales off Auke Bay, a hatchery full of salmon and trails that start at the edge of downtown.
Mendenhall Glacier & Nugget Falls
A glacier you can reach by road, 12 miles from downtown, with a visitor center and a flat lakeside trail to the foot of Nugget Falls.
Perseverance Trail
Alaska's first road, now a trail up the Gold Creek valley past old mine workings, starting at the top of Basin Road.
Mount Roberts Trail
A steep climb from rainforest to alpine ridge above downtown, with views over Gastineau Channel and the ships.
National Shrine of St. Thérèse
A beach-stone chapel on a small island joined by a causeway, with shoreline paths, north of Auke Bay.
Goldbelt Tram (Mount Roberts)
An aerial tram from the cruise docks to 1,800 feet on Mount Roberts. It has been closed since an accident in April 2026.
Walking map: the docks and downtown Juneau
The cruise berths line the waterfront along South Franklin Street. Downtown rises steeply behind them: the shops, saloons and the Walter Soboleff Building are on the flat blocks near the water, and the Capitol and St. Nicholas Church are uphill.

Trail map: walks from downtown
Basin Road climbs from downtown along Gold Creek to the Perseverance Trail and the Last Chance Mining Museum. Check the city's trail notices before you go: the valley has had slide warnings and closures in past years.
