Walking map: the docks and downtown Juneau

The cruise berths line the waterfront along South Franklin Street. Downtown rises steeply behind them: the shops, saloons and the Walter Soboleff Building are on the flat blocks near the water, and the Capitol and St. Nicholas Church are uphill.

Questions visitors ask

Can I see Mendenhall Glacier in 4 hours?

Yes, but it takes most of the call. The glacier is about 12 miles out, and the round-trip shuttle we list runs about 3 hours. If you go by city bus, allow up to 1.5 hours each way. This plan stays downtown instead.

Is there time for whale watching?

A short whale trip fits. Ultimate Juneau Whale Watch takes about 3 hours, which leaves little time for town, so compare its times with your all-aboard time before you book.

Is everything in this plan walkable from the ship?

From the downtown docks, yes. The totem poles line the Seawalk, the Walter Soboleff Building is a few minutes from the Steamship Wharf and Tracy’s is two minutes from the cruise terminal. From the AJ Dock, take the shuttle in first.

How do I avoid missing the ship?

Plan to be back 30 minutes before the all-aboard time in your ship’s daily program, and leave extra time for the shuttle if you are at the AJ Dock. A tour booked through your ship will wait if it runs late; an independent one won’t.
