Rainy-Day Juneau: Indoor Things to Do
Museums, Native art, the Capitol, a gold mine and a hatchery aquarium for a wet port day, with the hours that catch people out.
By Greg Peters, editor · Updated October 2026
Juneau averages about 67 inches of rain a year, and even summer months get several inches, so a wet port day is normal here. Locals carry a rain jacket and get on with it. If you'd rather be indoors, these are the best options, with the opening days that catch visitors out.
Museums and culture
- Walter Soboleff Building: Sealaska Heritage's center for Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian culture, with a walk-through cedar clan house. Travel Juneau lists summer hours of 10 am to 7 pm daily, changing with ship schedules. It's a few minutes from the downtown docks.
- Alaska State Museum: the statewide collection, including Alaska Native art and history. General admission $9. The state lists Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, so it may be closed on a Sunday or Monday port day; check before you walk over.
- Juneau-Douglas City Museum: local history opposite the Capitol. From July to December 2026 it opened Wednesday to Saturday, 11 am to 4:30 pm.
- Alaska State Capitol: free guided tours on summer weekdays at 1:30 and 3:00 pm, about an hour. In 2026 they ran from June 1 to September 25.
Something different
- Underground gold mine tour: hard hats, tunnels and gold panning, about 2 hours 15 minutes. A good pick for families in the rain.
- Macaulay Salmon Hatchery: aquarium tanks of local sea life, plus the fish ladder outside if you don't mind getting damp. Adults $7 in summer. It's 3 miles from downtown, so take a taxi or tour.
- Hearthside Books on Merchants Wharf for Alaska books and maps (closed Sundays), and the galleries on Seward and Franklin Streets. See Shop.
- Lunch somewhere warm: a long lunch at Hangar on the Wharf, watching floatplanes from the window, or a pint at the Red Dog Saloon.
Rain doesn't stop most tours
Whale-watching boats, the salmon bake and most walking tours run in rain. Low cloud is what cancels helicopter and floatplane flights, so if those matter to you, book them early in your cruise in case they need to be moved.
